The Salvador da Bahia Landfill Gas Management Project was one of the first projects registered with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in the world, and the first project to issue Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs) in Brazil. The project is located at the Aterro Metropolitano Centro, a landfill that receives more than 3,000 tons of waste per day from the Salvador Metropolitan Area.
The plant began operations in 2004, burning landfill gas, and was upgraded to power generation in 2011. It is currently the second largest landfill gas-fired power plant in Brazil and has issued more than 8,000,000 CERs.
At the power generation plant, landfill gas is used as a renewable fuel to generate electricity in state-of-the-art equipment with a capacity of 20 MW, providing electricity to more than 500,000 people. The remaining landfill gas is burned in a high-temperature flare.
The project promotes significant positive impacts for sustainable development in Brazil.
- First, by collecting and destroying/using landfill gas, it also minimizes the risk of explosions at the landfill site.

What are the project SDGs
The project Salvador da Bahia Landfill Gas Management Project includes 4 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which are:

AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY
Ensure reliable, sustainable, modern, and affordable access to energy for all. This goal aims to ensure that all people have access to reliable, sustainable, and modern energy sources to meet their basic needs such as lighting, heating, transportation, and productive use. This includes promoting access to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, and ensuring that the energy transition is made inclusively and equitably, taking into account the needs of the most vulnerable communities. Additionally, it seeks to improve energy efficiency and expand access to energy services in rural and remote areas.

DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. This goal aims to ensure that economic growth is sustainable and inclusive, creating decent jobs and work opportunities for all people. It seeks to achieve full and productive employment and decent work, as well as promote equal opportunities in the labor market, reduce informality, and combat all forms of child labor and forced labor. SDG 8 also encourages the development of policies that support entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic growth in sustainable sectors.

INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation. This goal aims to promote the development of quality and sustainable infrastructure across all sectors, including transportation, energy, water, and sanitation. It seeks to increase access to technology and information and communication services, as well as promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development. Additionally, SDG 9 encourages innovation and investment in research and development to stimulate economic growth and address global challenges.

CLIMATE ACTION
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. This goal aims to address the challenges posed by climate change, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to adverse impacts already occurring, and promoting climate resilience. Achieving this goal requires actions at various levels, from local to international, aiming at mitigating emissions, developing adaptation strategies, implementing environmental policies, and mobilizing resources to finance measures to combat climate change. SDG 13 recognizes the urgency of acting to avoid the worst effects of climate change and to protect the environment for future generations.
