The project is a partnership between Biofílica and residents of the Rio Preto-Jacundá State Extractive Reserve, represented by its association (Asmorex), with the Rioterra Studies Center and the Executive Council of the Extractive Reserves of the Vale do Anari as partners in planning and implementing the Project activities.
The REDD+ RESEX Jacundá Project focuses on investing in improving the quality of life for communities and monitoring forest cover and biodiversity. The RESEX is located in an area under great pressure for the predatory exploitation of natural resources and lacks basic public services. In this context, residents have found in the REDD+ Project a solution for social development and conservation of the forests in their territory.
LOCATION AND IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT
The REDD+ RESEX Jacundá Project is located in a state conservation unit, a type of extractive reserve (RESEX), located in the northeast of the state of Rondônia, between the municipalities of Machadinho D'Oeste and Cujubim.
The creation of the RESEX in 1996, by State Decree 7,336, was supported by a history of struggle for community rights. In this context, the main objectives of the project for communities are the elevation of local empowerment and the improvement of quality of life, in various aspects, of a population that seeks reward for being, as they call themselves, “guardians of the forest”.

What are the project SDGs
The project REDD+ RESEX Jacundá Project includes 7 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, which are:

QUALITY EDUCATION
Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. This goal aims to ensure that all people, regardless of their background or circumstances, have access to quality education at all levels, from early childhood education to higher education and vocational training. This includes promoting equal access to education, improving the quality and relevance of teaching, and ensuring safe and inclusive learning environments. Additionally, the goal seeks to promote lifelong learning opportunities, recognizing the importance of continuous education for the personal and professional development of people of all ages.

GENDER EQUALITY
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. This goal aims to promote gender equality and eliminate all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls. This includes ensuring equal access to educational, economic, and political opportunities, as well as promoting women's participation in decision-making processes at all levels. Additionally, it seeks to eliminate harmful practices such as child and forced marriage and promote access to sexual and reproductive health. SDG 5 recognizes that achieving gender equality is essential for sustainable development and for creating more just and inclusive societies.

AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY
Ensure reliable, sustainable, modern, and affordable access to energy for all. This goal aims to ensure that all people have access to reliable, sustainable, and modern energy sources to meet their basic needs such as lighting, heating, transportation, and productive use. This includes promoting access to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, and ensuring that the energy transition is made inclusively and equitably, taking into account the needs of the most vulnerable communities. Additionally, it seeks to improve energy efficiency and expand access to energy services in rural and remote areas.

INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation. This goal aims to promote the development of quality and sustainable infrastructure across all sectors, including transportation, energy, water, and sanitation. It seeks to increase access to technology and information and communication services, as well as promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development. Additionally, SDG 9 encourages innovation and investment in research and development to stimulate economic growth and address global challenges.

RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
Ensure sustainable patterns of production and consumption. This goal aims to promote production and consumption practices that are more resource-efficient, less polluting, generate less waste, and have reduced environmental impact. This includes promoting efficiency in the use of natural resources, reducing waste, adopting cleaner production practices, and implementing sustainable supply chains. SDG 12 also seeks to raise awareness about the environmental and social impacts of unsustainable production and consumption patterns, encouraging the adoption of more sustainable and responsible lifestyles.

CLIMATE ACTION
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. This goal aims to address the challenges posed by climate change, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to adverse impacts already occurring, and promoting climate resilience. Achieving this goal requires actions at various levels, from local to international, aiming at mitigating emissions, developing adaptation strategies, implementing environmental policies, and mobilizing resources to finance measures to combat climate change. SDG 13 recognizes the urgency of acting to avoid the worst effects of climate change and to protect the environment for future generations.

LIFE ON LAND
Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss. This goal aims to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, mountains, and drylands, as well as the protection of biodiversity and natural habitats. It seeks to promote sustainable land management practices, restoration of degraded ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, combating desertification and land degradation, and preventing species extinction. SDG 15 recognizes the fundamental role of terrestrial ecosystems in the health of the planet, in mitigating climate change, and in human well-being.
